Let me recommend the extremely thoughtful and entertaining podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones (click on the title to go to their homepage and access their archives). Hosted by Tyler Mahan Coe, each episode dives deep into the history of a particular artist in country music history. But more than straight biography, there is fascinating historical context, commentary on the music industry, and all kinds of other interesting information resulting in a much richer picture of the times and the music than you might anticipate from the episode titles. Coe even supplies detailed liner notes for each episode in which he identifies and critiques the various sources used to construct his narratives. Hey, I wrote a book that covers some of this same territory, and I learn quite a bit each time I listen-- so check it out.
