Thanks to my friends Tom and Sheila (foreground above; Craig & Delena behind them), I had a ride down to a backroad in SE Idaho to see the total eclipse of the sun this morning. Not having a solar filter for my DSLR, I just took along my pocket Sony to make pictures of those watching the skies. But it turned out the lens was small enough that I could cover it with my eclipse glasses and use it to shoot the event itself, so below are some shots of the progress of the moon across the sky. I know there are better pictures all over the airwaves and internet, so this is more to commemorate what I saw than a demonstration of my photographic abilities. This-- hanging with friends, having a picnic on a lovely day, and seeing the eclipse-- was a great way to end the summer (back to work tomorrow). The other photos below (not of the sun) are of another friend, Karl, and a colander image of the eclipse.

One last picture: I-15 was backed up for miles in SW Montana after the eclipse-- something I never expected to see in that part of the country. We got off on a county road that ran adjacent and got away from the tie-up, but here's a picture of what it looked like from across a hay field (that's smoke obscuring the mountains in the background):
