My Favorite Mark Twain Quote, Today

“It liberates the vandal to travel — you never saw a bigoted,
                               opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty
mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place since he was
born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for
his especial comfort and satisfaction.” 1868

My Favorite Movie Scene, Today

The Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis is probably the most famous place in Athens, the site of the Parthenon as well as the ruins of various other temples and public buildings that go back thousands of years.  In addition to the sites at the top of the plateau, it also provides stunning views of the modern city stretching out below. These are some of the pictures I collected there last month.

The Parthenon

This bastion at one corner of the complex sits at the top of a steep cliff. During World War II, when Athens was occupied by the Germans, three young men scaled the cliff one night and replaced the Nazi flag with a Greek flag, and became instant heroes. According to our guide, one of those men is still alive and this spot is hugely popular with local visitors.

This is a temple of Zeus, visible from the top of the Acropolis; in the lower left is Hadrian's Gate which dats to the Roman period.
