This set of photos were made at the island of Spinalonga off the northeast coast of Crete. Spinalonga was a fortress protecting the nearby port of ancient Olous. Later it was taken over and expanded under Venetian rule (15th century), and then again under the Ottomans (18th century). In the twentieth century, it became a leper colony, which operated on the island until the 1950s. Today, it's a tourist cite with remnants of all those phases of its history, some of which can be seen in these photos.
