The End of an Era

I don't doubt that there are many fine editorial cartoonists still plying their trade in America's newspapers.  But I was saddened to find out that Tom Toles is stepping down from that position for the Washington Post.  I've been reading Toles' cartoons since they appeared in the University of Buffalo student paper, the Spectrum back in the seventies; he went on to the Buffalo Courier Express (before its demise), and then the Buffalo News before moving to the Post. He is without question the greatest inheritor of the wit, insight, and artistry of his predecessor at the Post, Herb Block-- not to mention such other giants of the field as Bill Mauldin, Don Wright and Pat Oliphant.  I wish him a long, healthy, happy retirement-- he's earned it, but he will be missed.  And please-- PLEASE!-- take the center square request above to heart: as usual, Toles knows what he's talking about.
