The Ruins at Knossos

Knossos is the largest archaeological site in Crete, and apparently people were living in that place going all the way back to 7000 BC. It would become the main city on Crete during the Minoan period, with a series palaces built there beginning around 2000 BC. Ultimately, that society collapsed early in the first century AD-- in other words, a great city that lasted for almost 8000 years, yet has existed merely as ruins for the next 2000 years. Incredible! Modern excavations began in the 1870s, and continue to the present.
